Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Manpower Yassierli emphasized that the government is pivoting toward stronger risk management and preventive measures in overhauling labor sector oversight. “Prevention must be at the core of efforts aimed at ensuring companies' compliance with employment norms. Therefore, it is important that we strengthen supervisory instruments to identify potential risks early,” he said in a statement released in Jakarta on Tuesday. Yassierli underscored the urgency of expanding oversight beyond enforcing compliance to preventing violations through data, technology, and cross-sector collaboration. To that end, he stated that the government is optimizing the role of labor unions and occupational health and safety (OHS) committees as strategic partners to detect and prevent employment issues. He added that the Ministry of Manpower is pursuing digitalization while leveraging self-assessment mechanisms adopted by companies to further strengthen monitoring. The minister further stressed that a risk-based approach to oversight is key to transforming the labor sector. His office applies this strategy by integrating OHS data, labor standards records, public complaints, and data from the state labor insurer BPJS Ketenagakerjaan to map potential risks. “We will also encourage provincial OHS centers to spearhead proactive and preventive measures,” Yassierli added. He highlighted plans to strengthen the capacity of OHS centers to identify risks in their respective regions, providing the central government with reliable data to prioritize interventions in vulnerable areas. The centers are also expected to strengthen education, outreach, and guidance for companies to improve compliance with employment regulations, he noted. Yassierli argued that all these efforts require professional human resources with a high level of integrity. “We have prepared regulations to make employment oversight more professional, uphold integrity, and contribute to the creation of safe, healthy, and productive work environments,” Yassierli said.
