Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government estimates the Waingapu Integrated Shrimp Farming project, a national strategic initiative in East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, will create around 7,000 jobs and produce approximately 52,000 metric tons of shrimp annually.”Developing the integrated shrimp farming area is one of the government's efforts to bolster national food security while opening new economic opportunities for residents in eastern Indonesia,” Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan noted in a statement on Friday.He pointed out that the 2,150-hectare shrimp estate is expected to employ roughly 7,000 workers across the supply chain, including feed and seed distribution, shrimp cultivation, and processing.Hasan added that recruitment for around 3,000 local workers is already underway, noting that qualified candidates will undergo training to ensure optimal operation of the estate.Moreover, Hasan pointed out that the Waingapu project is expected to generate Rp4 trillion (about US$221.43 million) in annual production value, supported by Rp7.2 trillion (about US$398.58 million) in government development investment.He explained that the integrated farming site will feature cultivation ponds, wastewater treatment installations, reservoirs, and green spaces. The government, he continued, is expediting the development of ponds, access roads, irrigation channels, and supporting facilities to enable production to begin as soon as possible.He further noted that the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs is working with relevant institutions to fulfill regulatory requirements and clear operational obstacles, aiming to bring the estate into operation by 2028.Hasan underscored the national strategic project as a vital instrument to boost national shrimp production, strengthen the fisheries industry, and elevate the welfare of East Sumba residents.He also expressed hope that the Waingapu farming complex would build a more efficient shrimp supply chain by providing adequate production and processing facilities while expanding international market access.
