“Tempe” potential to become a flagship product in the US market

strong buyer interest in tempe as the plant-based food trend continues to grow in the USJakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian processed food products, including tempe, has recorded potential transactions worth US$8.3 million (around Rp150.7 billion) at the Summer Fancy Food Show (SFFS) in New York.Indonesian Trade Attaché in Washington D.C. Ranitya Kusumadewi said the exhibition had opened opportunities for tempe to become one of Indonesian products with the potential to penetrate the US market.”We continue to monitor the follow-up to the business matching sessions held during the exhibition, so that the potential transactions can be realised into export contracts. In addition to the transaction potential, we have seen very strong buyer interest in tempe as the plant-based food trend continues to grow in the United States,” Kusumadewi said in a statement received here on Friday.She noted tempe is considered one of the Indonesian products with the greatest potential in the US market, driven by a growing demand for plant-based and fermented foods alongside healthier consumer lifestyles.”The high level of buyer interest must be matched by businesses' readiness to maintain production capacity, ensure supply consistency, meet quality standards, and strengthen packaging and marketing strategies. In this way, the business opportunities created can develop into sustainable exports,” Kusumadewo explained.At the event, the Indonesia Pavilion featured six business players, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The products on display included coffee, cocoa and chocolate products, snacks, and instant noodles.Healthy food products, such as tempe, coconut-based products, herbs and spices, honey, palm sugar, and various processed food products were also showcased.The United States is the Indonesia's second-largest export market for food products after China.In 2025, the value of Indonesia's food product exports to the US reached US$5.97 billion, an increase of 14.06 percent from US$5.23 billion in the previous year.The figure accounted for around 10.1 percent of Indonesia's total food exports to the global market, which reached US$59.04 billion in 2025.
