Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat has supported carbon trading collaboration with the government's Red and White Village Cooperatives.The village cooperatives will oversee a wide range of economic activities, turning the movement into a grassroots economic revolution.”A high-integrity carbon market can only be realised, if the benefits and revenue from carbon credit sales are genuinely felt by the community,” Hidayat said here in Jakarta on Thursday.This was highlighted during the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperative-based environmental protection and management between the Environment Ministry and Cooperatives Ministry.According to the Hidayat, local communities involved in carbon trading and economic activities must be incorporated as legal entities to conduct business legally. In this context, cooperatives are considered an effective vehicle to empower the public.He expressed hope that cooperatives will foster mutual support and education at the grassroots level, ensuring that carbon trading does not merely benefit speculators or the elite, but also delivers tangible benefits to local communities.The economic value of Indonesia's carbon trading is massive, Hidayat added, with potential reaching tens of thousands of trillions of rupiah across the country.”Therefore, the collaboration between the environmental sector and cooperatives is critical to managing this economic potential and ensuring its benefits reach the public,” he remarked.He also affirmed his office's support for the initiative as it aligns with efforts to reorient development in favor of the people.
