Indonesian shrimp face 13.9 pct US tariff, lower than Vietnam: Gov’t

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The US tariff on Indonesian shrimp stands at around 13.90 percent in total, placing Indonesia in a more favorable position than India and Vietnam, according to the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry. The ministry's Acting Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products, Erwin Dwiyana, informed that the tariff on Indonesian shrimp consists of an additional Section 301 tariff of 10 percent and an anti-dumping duty of 3.90 percent.”Indonesia can further strengthen its position in the US shrimp market, especially relative to Asian suppliers, although Ecuador is likely to remain a strong competitor,” he noted in a statement on Friday. He addressed that the total tariff on Indonesian shrimp is lower than the tariff for India, which reaches 19.53 percent, and Vietnam, with 41.10 percent. He believes this tariff difference provides an opportunity for Indonesia to increase its competitiveness and expand its shrimp market share in the US.Data from the ministry places the US as Indonesia's main shrimp export market, accounting for US$1.15 billion of the country’s total US$1.87 billion shrimp exports, or around 61.5 percent.Over the past five years, the average value of Indonesian shrimp exports has been recorded at around US$1.93 billion per year, with an average volume of approximately 229,250 tons.To optimize this market opportunity, the ministry vows to strengthen coordination with relevant ministries and institutions, fisheries associations, exporters, and Indonesian representatives in the US.As part of these efforts, the government is assisting Indonesian shrimp exporters with the administrative review of anti-dumping duties. In addition, the ministry also sees opportunities to increase the competitiveness of several other fishery commodities in the US market.Dwiyana explained that Indonesia secures a 2.5 percent tariff advantage for crab and swimming crab compared to several Asian suppliers, such as Vietnam and the Philippines.Indonesian tuna products also enjoy a similar tariff advantage compared to products from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and South Korea.Meanwhile, Indonesian squid, cuttlefish, octopus, and tilapia are also potential to increase their competitiveness compared to products from a number of Asian suppliers, such as China, Vietnam, and Thailand.Furthermore, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries highlighted the need to strengthen supply chain credibility to maintain market confidence and minimize the risk of trade barriers.
