BI promotes cross-border QRIS to North Sulawesi residents

Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA) – Bank Indonesia (BI) continues to promote the Cross-Border Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), which is now available for transactions in four countries, to residents of North Sulawesi.“The four countries are Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Japan,” said Head of BI North Sulawesi Representative Office Joko Supratikto in Manado on Friday. He explained that residents of North Sulawesi traveling to these countries no longer need to worry about transactions since QRIS can be used.In Japan, QRIS Cross Border is connected to the JPQR system for payments in yen. In Thailand, it can be used by scanning the PromptPay code at participating merchants. In Malaysia, users can scan the DuitNow QR code at merchants, while Malaysian tourists in Indonesia can also use DuitNow QR.In Singapore, QRIS can be used to scan NETS QR codes, and the system works both ways for Singaporean tourists visiting Indonesia.QRIS Cross Border enables Indonesian tourists to make payments abroad using domestic payment applications. Transactions are carried out directly in rupiah without the need for foreign currency exchange, making them more practical and time-efficient.“Faster transactions make it easier for tourists and businesses to carry out cross-border payments,” Joko said. The QRIS initiative aims to boost digital transactions with efficient costs, promote financial inclusion, and expand payment connectivity to other countries. It also serves as an entry point to the digital ecosystem for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), opening access to digital services such as financing and investment.Integrating QRIS into regional trade networks is part of Indonesia’s effort to build economic sovereignty and a fairer global financial system. In addition to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan, other countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, and Laos have also agreed to implement QRIS.
