Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Creative Economy Ministry sees the creative economy sector as a potential alternative source of employment for young people, especially amid the high proportion of Gen Z and Millenials among the unemployed.Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya mentioned about 82 percent of Indonesia's 7.5 million unemployed come from Gen Z and Millennials, while 63 percent of 27.4 million workers in the creative economy sector come from the two generational groups.”The creative economy sector can contribute to reducing open unemployment, in which 82 percent are Gen Z and Millennials,” Harsya said in his remarks at the Indonesian Creative Works (KKI) 2026 here on Saturday.He explained creative economy sector has characteristics that align with the preferences of today's young generation. Gen Z and Millennials tend to seek jobs that match to their interests or passion, offer flexibility, and provide competitive income opportunities.The creative economy sector also has a growing capacity to absorb workers, with around 1 to 1.5 million people entering the sector each year.”Every year, data from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) shows that between 1 million and 1.5 million people enter the creative economy sector,” Harsya said.Young people in creative economy development are not merely positioned as targets of development, he added, but also as key actors who create works and build new businesses.The creative economy sector currently contributes about 7.38 percent to the national gross domestic product (GDP). The government is optimistic the contribution can reach 8 percent before 2029.In expanding the contribution and opening new jobs, the government has issued a presidential regulation on the 2026-2029 Creative Economy Master Plan (Rindekraf), covering 21 creative economy sub-sectors.The creative economy sub-sectors include fashion, culinary, crafts, games, applications, film, and music, which are positioned as the government's priority for contributing to GDP.In addition, the government is also encouraging the development of new technology and digital-based sub-sectors, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, Web3, cybersecurity, digital content, content creators, affiliators, and livestreaming-based commerce.
