Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is developing a hydrogen ecosystem and its utilization for the domestic economic ecosystem at the launch of the 2026 Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES). “The government needs to develop this Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit, because we see the need from an ecosystem perspective,” Deputy Minister of ESDM Yuliot Tanjung said.He made the statement when opening the GHES virtually, which was held at the Office of the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), here on Tuesday.Through the summit, Tanjung hopes that Indonesia will have the technology to support hydrogen industrialization and its utilization for the overall economic ecosystem. One of the benefits of hydrogen in the economic ecosystem is its use in domestic downstream industries, including the fertilizer industry.Tanjung stated that maximizing hydrogen utilization for downstream industrial needs in Indonesia has the potential to make Indonesia a major global player in the hydrogen sector.”Developing this hydrogen ecosystem represents our potential as a major global player. This will be incredibly promising,” he said.Tanjung stated that Indonesia's hydrogen consumption is 1.75 million tons per year. Hydrogen use is predominantly for food security, specifically for urea fertilizer, ammonia, and oil refineries. He added that hydrogen development also aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's Astacita (priority targets), which aim to strengthen national energy independence and resilience.”We also link national energy security to food security, as well as the downstreaming program we mentioned earlier,” Tanjung said.Hydrogen development also serves as a manifestation of Indonesia's commitment to achieving zero carbon emissions by 2060, as hydrogen has the potential to become an alternative fuel to replace fossil fuels. The Ministry of ESDM has previously accelerated the establishment of a hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia to align with the National Hydrogen Strategy and the National Hydrogen and Ammonia Plan (RHAN).The Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the ministry, Eniya Listiani Dewi, explained that hydrogen development is not only a decarbonization instrument but also a pillar of long-term economic transformation and industrialization. The hydrogen ecosystem, she continued, will strengthen national energy security and encourage low-carbon industrialization that is competitive in the global market.
