Garuda says pilot followed SOP after Jakarta-Sydney flight turbulence

Bogor, W Java (ANTARA) – Garuda Indonesia on Friday said the pilot of a Jakarta–Sydney flight that encountered turbulence shortly before landing had followed all required safety procedures, as the airline sought to reassure passengers after the incident raised public concern.President director Glenny H. Kairupan said flight GA 712, which was operating the Jakarta–Sydney route on Thursday, December 25, 2025, experienced turbulence about 30 minutes before arrival, but the pilot in command adhered fully to standard operating procedures (SOP) throughout the flight.“In line with these procedures, the aircraft landed safely at Sydney Airport in Australia in accordance with all applicable safety regulations, and all passengers disembarked normally,” Kairupan said in a statement released in Jakarta on Friday afternoon. The pilot in command, or PIC, is the pilot with the highest authority and full responsibility for the safety and operation of an aircraft during a flight, from the moment it begins moving until operations are completed.Garuda said the PIC took appropriate measures to manage the turbulence and ensure the safety of everyone on board. As part of its commitment to passenger care, the national flag carrier has set up a dedicated help desk to monitor and follow up on feedback and reports from passengers related to the incident, Kairupan said, adding that the airline remains open to addressing concerns raised by those affected.Responding to information circulating on social media, he stressed that no cabin crew members suffered broken bones as a result of the turbulence, countering unverified reports that had spread online following the flight. He said two cabin crew members sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital in Sydney for medical observation. One crew member has since been discharged, while the other remains under further observation as a precautionary measure.Garuda Indonesia is coordinating with relevant aviation authorities to obtain any necessary follow-up recommendations, Kairupan added, reiterating the airline’s ongoing commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety, security and passenger comfort on all its flights.
