Gibran urges Islamic groups to safeguard unity

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Friday urged Islamic community organizations to help safeguard national unity and play a more active role in advancing development, as the government seeks broader public support for President Prabowo Subianto’s agenda.Gibran made the call while hosting leaders of Persatuan Umat Islam (PUI), or the Islamic Association, at the Vice Presidential Palace in Jakarta, according to a statement from the Vice Presidential Secretariat. He stressed that community participation is essential to national development and said Islamic organizations have historically contributed to strengthening social cohesion, maintaining national consolidation and accelerating development efforts. The secretariat described the meeting as a strategic forum to deepen coordination between the government and civil society in promoting inclusive and sustainable growth across the country.Stronger collaboration between the state and community groups aligns with Prabowo’s eight priority missions, known collectively as the “Asta Cita,” particularly in improving human resource quality, reinforcing national unity and ensuring equitable development. The meeting also formed part of a Ramadan outreach by PUI’s newly appointed leadership, aimed at building ties with national figures and reaffirming its commitment to supporting development programs.Gibran welcomed the new leadership and praised the organization’s longstanding role in education, Islamic outreach, social services, religious moderation and the promotion of unity in diversity.PUI Chairman Raizal Arifin said the visit was intended to formally introduce the new leadership lineup and strengthen communication with the government.Founded in 1917, PUI has focused on education, religious preaching and social welfare activities, Arifin said.He noted that two prominent figures associated with the organization — K.H. Abdul Salim and K.H. Ahmad Sanusi — were later recognized as national heroes for their contributions to Indonesia’s independence movement.Arifin reaffirmed the group’s commitment to backing government development programs, saying PUI would continue taking concrete steps to support policies aimed at improving public welfare. The government has increasingly engaged religious and community organizations as partners in advancing social stability and inclusive growth in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.
