Hartarto optimistic Indonesia-UK economic ties to upgrade to CEPA

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto is optimistic that Indonesia–United Kingdom economic relations will advance to a higher level through the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).According to the top minister, the current level of economic collaboration through the Economic Growth Partnership (EGP) scheme is a stepping stone before reaching a greater level of cooperation.”We have signed the Economic Growth Partnership agreement and, for the next step, we will enhance the cooperation to a greater level,” he stated on the sidelines of the 2026 Indonesia Economic Summit (IEC) here on Tuesday.Hartarto stated that the Indonesia-UK economic partnership has covered strategic sectors crucial for the nation, including clean energy and green transition through environmentally friendly technology support and sustainable energy funding.The partnership also covered the digital economic sector, especially collaboration in digital technology innovation and enhancement in digital infrastructure.In the food resilience and agriculture sector, the collaboration is directed to improving standards and expanding access to food and beverage products, he said.Indonesia and the UK have also committed to deepening collaboration in the education and health sectors, including exploring a plan to open UK universities in Indonesia.Meanwhile, in the maritime sector, Indonesia has sealed an investment commitment from the UK, valued at £4 billion or equal to Rp91.47 trillion, for the development of fishing boats and fishing villages.Through the investment commitment, Indonesia plans to develop thousands of fishing boats for fishermen, as well as fishing villages in various places nationwide.“The United Kingdom will also help design the ship. The number to be produced, which is 1,582, aligns with our needs,” Hartarto added.
