Indonesia achieves protein, carbohydrate self-sufficiency: Bapanas

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) Andi Amran Sulaiman asserted that Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency in several protein and carbohydrate sources without imports through strengthened domestic production and food policies.”We have achieved self-sufficiency in both protein and carbohydrates. These are the nutrients the body needs,” he stated during a meeting with Commission IV of the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Tuesday. He noted that Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency in several strategic food staples, including rice, eggs, poultry, and feed corn. These four commodities serve as primary sources of carbohydrates and protein, while also supporting the production of animal-based proteins. The achievement of carbohydrate and protein self-sufficiency is recorded in the 2025 National Food Balance Projection. For rice, no imports were carried out throughout 2025, as annual production reached 34.69 million tons—surpassing the annual consumption requirement of 31.16 million tons.Meanwhile, self-sufficiency has also been reached for poultry and eggs. There were no imports in 2025 since domestic production continued to exceed national demand.Poultry production recorded at 4.29 million tons with consumption standing at 4.12 million tons. Meanwhile, egg production reached 6.54 million tons with annual consumption of 6.47 million tons.In 2025, Indonesia also did not import feed corn. Production of feed corn with a 14 percent moisture content reached 16.16 million tons throughout the year, meeting the consumption demand of 15.23 million tons.Sulaiman further noted that Indonesia also no longer depends on imports for several other strategic food staples. In fact, he emphasized that the country has now become an exporter to the global market.According to him, the food self-sufficiency vision as led by President Prabowo Subianto is key to addressing crises triggered by geopolitical conflicts and climate change. The shift in the rice self-sufficiency target from four years to just one, achieved by the end of 2025, serves as a testament to the President's vision. In the government food reserves, rice currently holds the largest stock, reaching 4.6 million tons as of April 7.Bapanas recorded that the government food reserves include 177,000 tons of feed corn, 122,000 kiloliters of cooking oil, 48,000 tons of consumer-grade sugar, 8,000 tons of beef, 3,000 tons of buffalo meat, 39 tons of poultry, and 7 tons of eggs.
