Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and state utility PT PLN signed a cooperation agreement to align marine spatial planning with national electricity infrastructure development.Director General of Marine Spatial Planning at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Kartika Listriana said the partnership aims to ensure spatial requirements for electricity infrastructure are incorporated into national planning.”Marine spatial planning is not merely a policy and regulatory instrument, but a strategic tool to balance economic, social, and ecological interests,” Kartika said in an official statement issued in Jakarta on Monday. She said marine spatial planning can help synchronize national priority programs, particularly in supporting Indonesia’s energy independence and long-term energy security.Kartika added that marine spatial planning also plays a critical role in preserving ecological functions and marine biodiversity, including protecting blue carbon ecosystems to support greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.Director of Legal and Human Capital Management at PT PLN Yusuf Didi Setiarto said marine space utilization has become essential for electricity infrastructure development. He said the infrastructure includes coastal power plants, subsea cable networks, substations, and other supporting facilities needed to strengthen Indonesia’s national electricity system.According to Yusuf, stronger integration between power sector development and marine spatial planning policy is needed to create legal certainty, improve permitting efficiency, and safeguard marine ecosystems.”This collaboration is a concrete manifestation of the spirit of mutual cooperation in national development and an important foundation for strengthening national energy resilience and energy sovereignty,” he said. The agreement covers marine spatial planning implementation, marine space utilization permitting requirements, compliance obligations, data and licensing information sharing, and human resource capacity building. The ministry said the cooperation aligns with Indonesia’s blue economy policy, which seeks to advance sustainable marine development while improving the welfare of coastal communities.
