Indonesia backs renewable energy for shrimp farming

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Kemendes PDTT) is supporting the adoption of renewable energy technologies in shrimp aquaculture to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and strengthen the industry's competitiveness.Director General of Development Acceleration for Disadvantaged Regions at Kemendes PDTT Samsul Widodo said on Friday that shrimp farming is a leading export-oriented industry that requires technological modernization to sustain its competitiveness.”The government supports renewable energy programs across all sectors, including aquaculture. Besides utilizing village funds, the program can also collaborate with the private sector through corporate social responsibility initiatives,” Widodo said.The initiative is being implemented through the Aquaculture for Climate Resilience program using the Climate Resilience Farmers Field School (CRFSS) approach, which combines capacity building for shrimp farmers with the adoption of climate-smart technologies.The strategic partnership between P4G Crustea and PT Sustainability & Resilience (su-re.co) targets at least 250 shrimp farmers and fisheries extension officers across four districts in Lombok and Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara.The program introduces solar-powered Eco-Aerators and Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring systems to reduce operating costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve farm productivity.Researcher at PT Sustainability & Resilience (su-re.co) Naafi Lathifah said hybrid solar panel systems reduced electricity consumption from state-owned electricity company PLN by 42 to 50 percent in a pilot project in Gianyar, Bali.The system, which integrates solar panels with the PLN power grid and battery storage, reliably supplied electricity for pond aerators for up to 10 hours a day.”In the Gianyar pilot project, solar panels supplied electricity for aerators for about 10 hours per day. Preliminary results showed they reduced PLN electricity consumption by around 42 to 50 percent,” Naafi said.She said the program will expand the deployment of solar-powered paddle-wheel aerators to 10 aquaculture sites across West Nusa Tenggara.Naafi said the initiative adopts a pentahelix approach involving the government, the private sector, academia, and local communities to develop policy recommendations aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy in rural areas.
