Indonesia buys 12 Italian Leonardo M-346F Block 20 jets

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Defense has officially finalized a contract to procure 12 advanced M-346 F Block 20 fighter jets from Italian defense manufacturer Leonardo, to serve as advanced training aircraft for Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) pilots. The acquisition comes as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the nation's military equipment and align the armed forces' operational readiness with contemporary air defense doctrines, according to Defense Ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait.”One of the considerations is to meet the Indonesian Air Force's pilot training requirements while supporting operational readiness,” Rico said in his statement on Thursday.Rico explained that the M-346 F Block 20 was selected due to its advanced technical specifications, which seamlessly fit the military's broader strategic needs. He expressed confidence that integrating these cutting-edge aircraft will significantly elevate the overall combat readiness and technological capabilities of the TNI.The procurement contract has been signed and is already in effect. According to the ministry, the delivery of the 12 fighter jets to Indonesia is scheduled to begin in 2030, provided production timelines proceed without impediment. The incoming Italian-made aircraft will reinforce the TNI AU's specialized fighter pilot training fleet, which currently relies on the South Korean-manufactured T-50i Golden Eagle. The T-50i platform serves as a lead-in trainer for pilots transitioning to frontline combat aircraft, such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The TNI AU currently operates 22 units of the T-50i, stationed at the 15th Air Squadron in Iswahjudi Air Base, East Java.
