Indonesia calls ASEAN states to uphold centrality amid global tension

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono stated on Tuesday that ASEAN member states should uphold their centrality and unity in response to the current geopolitical situation and in advancing toward the future.”Our regional cooperation must remain cohesive, outward-looking, and adaptable to secure a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient future for all,” Sugiono stated in a recorded address to the third ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) in Hanoi on Tuesday. The forum was hosted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to information posted on the Indonesian foreign minister's social media accounts. In his remarks, delivered on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto, the minister shared his vision for the future of the ASEAN Community. He emphasized that centrality and unity across all pillars must be upheld. He also highlighted the need for a whole-of-ASEAN community approach while maintaining ASEAN centrality.”The political security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars must work as one and more effectively,” Sugiono remarked. The Indonesian foreign minister added that he looks forward to advancing the Indonesia-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the mutual benefit of both nations.According to the AFF website, this year's forum focuses on the theme “Shaping our Future Together: Peace, Prosperity, People-Centered.” This reflects ASEAN's need to act with unity and greater ambition amid profound global challenges. The theme underscores the belief that ASEAN’s future must be shaped collectively. Peace serves as the foundation of regional stability, prosperity drives sustainable development, and people remain at the center of regional progress. In this spirit, AFF 2026 seeks to move beyond diagnosis toward concrete, inclusive, and forward-looking conversations. Discussions will focus on how ASEAN can strengthen resilience, renew growth models, and harness emerging technologies. The forum will also explore ways to ensure that the region’s future is shaped collectively. This includes contributions not only from governments, but also from businesses, experts, communities, and the next generation.
