Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia and 17 other countries strongly condemned the Somaliland region's move to open a purported embassy in occupied Jerusalem.”This constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and relevant UN resolutions, and represents a direct infringement on the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem,” Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said on X on Sunday.The condemnation was issued by the foreign ministers of Indonesia and 17 other countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Turkiye, Pakistan, Somalia, Palestine, and Kuwait.In a joint statement, the ministers reaffirmed their rejection of unilateral measures aimed at legitimizing arrangements that violate international law and relevant United Nations resolutions in occupied Jerusalem.”They reiterate that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, and that any measures intended to alter its legal and historical status are null and void and without legal effect,” the ministry stated.The ministers also reaffirmed support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia and rejected unilateral actions undermining Somali sovereignty.The condemnation followed Somaliland's announcement that it plans to open an embassy in Jerusalem, while Israel would establish an embassy in Somaliland's capital, Hargeisa.Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent state in December 2025.Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since operated its own government, currency, and security forces, although it remains largely unrecognized internationally.Indonesia does not recognize Somaliland and considers the territory an integral part of Somalia.Jakarta opposes secessionist efforts in support of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and regional stability in the Horn of Africa.
