Jakarta (ANTARA) – Bank Indonesia (BI) has expanded the use of its national QR code payment system, the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS), for cross‑border transactions with China starting Thursday. The initiative allows Indonesians and Chinese citizens to make inbound and outbound payments by scanning QR codes. For now, the system supports UnionPay QR, Alipay QR, and unified QR codes displaying both logos. Other platforms, including WeChat Pay, remain under development and technical adjustment. “If we go to China or Chinese citizens come to Indonesia, they can use their mobile phone to pay,” BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said at the launch in Jakarta. Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong welcomed the move, praising Indonesia’s progress in financial and digital innovation. He said the banking sector must adapt to global changes, including artificial intelligence and digitalization, through investment in technology and human resources. Chairman of the Indonesian Payment Systems Association (ASPI) Santoso Liem described the collaboration as a major opportunity, noting the strong mobility of tourists between the two countries and the potential to strengthen business ties through cross‑border payments. Integration with China’s national QR code standard is being rolled out in stages, requiring coordination among service providers to ensure smooth connectivity. Future expansion is expected to include other platforms such as WeChat Pay, though implementation remains in the exploratory phase.
