Indonesia eyes WFH mandate to cut fuel use as oil prices surge

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is preparing a nationwide work-from-home (WFH) scheme to curb fuel consumption and mitigate the impact of soaring global oil prices, a senior minister said on Thursday.Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the government is finalizing a flexible working policy to increase energy efficiency amid geopolitical instability and rising energy costs.”With high oil prices, we need efficiency in working hours. We will provide flexibility for work-from-home arrangements,” Hartarto told reporters following a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto. The proposed policy introduces one day of remote work for every five-day workweek. It will apply to civil servants, regional government employees, and the private sector across the country.Implementation is scheduled to begin after the Eid al-Fitr holidays. Officials noted that the duration of the policy will depend on global oil price trends and ongoing international conflicts.President Subianto expressed support for the plan, citing significant potential savings. Reducing daily mobility is expected to cut fuel expenditures by approximately 20 percent, or one-fifth of current consumption levels.Earlier, Subianto urged proactive measures to address the global energy crisis during a Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday, March 13.”We must take proactive steps to save on fuel consumption. We cannot simply assume we are safe without making efforts to reduce our usage,” the president told the cabinet meeting.Technical details are currently being drafted by relevant ministries. The government plans to monitor the situation closely before making a final announcement regarding the official start date and enforcement guidelines.
