Indonesia moves to cut fuel use amid rising Middle East energy crisis

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said it is ready to carry out President Prabowo Subianto’s directive on energy conservation amid the threat of an energy crisis stemming from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot Tanjung said efficiency measures will be implemented comprehensively, covering fuel use for power plants, gas utilization, and operational evaluations across all energy sector.“From the operational side, detailed evaluations will also be conducted in every activity related to energy use,” Tanjung said after inspecting the Padalarang Fuel Terminal, located in West Bandung, West Java, on Monday. He added that the technical guidelines for implementing energy efficiency are currently under review.Meanwhile, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia previously stated that the government is preparing several concrete steps to accelerate the use of renewable energy. One of these measures involves replacing diesel-powered plants with alternatives that do not rely on fossil fuels.“The locations are spread across Indonesia, especially power plants that have long used diesel fuel. Given the current geopolitical tensions, we cannot be certain about our long-term energy situation. Therefore, we are optimizing domestic potential and converting fossil-based energy where possible,” he said. The program will be implemented gradually in various regions across Indonesia, especially in power plants that still depend on diesel fuel.During a cabinet meeting at the State Palace here on Friday (March 13), President Prabowo encouraged efforts to reduce fuel consumption and consider a work-from-home policy as a precautionary step to mitigate the impact of the global crisis.“We should discuss this further and consider how many days may be needed. We handled COVID before and succeeded. Working from home allowed efficiency and helped save a very large amount of fuel,” Prabowo said.
