Indonesia pushes local brands into malls and modern retail

I believe those that already perform well domestically can be pushed for export,Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Trade continues to encourage business matching between local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and modern retailers to help local brands break into shopping centers or malls.”We push business matching with modern retailers, such as Alun-Alun Indonesia—a department store that we need to fill with more Indonesian products,” the ministry's Director of Domestic Product Marketing, Dewi Rokhayati, said in Jakarta on Thursday.According to her, local brands and products that successfully secure a place in modern retail outlets demonstrate high quality and strong competitiveness. Therefore, enhancing product quality, brand elevation, and brand awareness is critical for local products to gain traction in the domestic market before eventually expanding into global markets.“Securing a spot in a modern retail outlet like Alun-Alun Indonesia means the product has effectively moved up a class; it is already high quality. I believe those that already perform well domestically can be pushed for export,” she remarked.Director of Export Development for Services and Creative Products at the Ministry of Trade, Ari Satria, added that the Indonesian government fully supports market expansion efforts, enabling local brands and products to compete globally.“The Ministry of Trade will certainly support the marketing of these products rooted in local wisdom so they can go global while also becoming well-known among Indonesian,” he asserted. He added that Indonesian creative products, such as handicrafts and traditional fabrics, have enormous potential and attract strong interest in international markets, reflecting global openness to products shaped by distinctive designs, lifestyles, and craftsmanship.“Moreover, global trends are increasingly shifting toward sustainable, natural-material, and handmade products that carry strong cultural storytelling elements,” Satria said.
