Indonesia speeds up charging station expansion to match EV growth

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is accelerating the expansion of public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLUs) to keep pace with the growth of electric vehicles (EVs) through cross-stakeholder collaboration.“SPKLU development opens up opportunities for various business models. This diversity is expected to drive business participation and speed up charging infrastructure deployment,” said Wahyudi Joko Santoso, Coordinator for Smart Grid, Electric Charging, and Storage Development, as quoted from the ministry’s official website on Tuesday.Wahyudi noted that the Indonesian government has issued Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Decree No. 24.K/TL.01/MEM.L/2025 regarding the SPKLU Development Plan for 2025–2030.The ministerial decree, he said, serves as the foundational roadmap for public EV charging infrastructure development across the country.He added that the decree was issued to accelerate the deployment of EV charging stations while taking into account location distribution and charger technology types.The plan covers installing charging stations across various locations, including shopping centers, office complexes, industrial zones, highway rest areas, gas stations, tourist spots, hospitals, train stations, bus terminals, hotels, and seaports.Meanwhile, Andi Nur Arief Wibowo, Sub-coordinator for Electric Charging and Storage Development at the ministry, highlighted that the government is continuously streamlining business licensing for charging station operators to make it easier for companies to build EV charging infrastructure across Indonesia.This step is expected to fast-track the growth of Indonesia's EV ecosystem.Earlier, PLN Retail and Commercial Director M. Fahrur Rozy highlighted the increasingly robust growth of EV adoption in Indonesia as reflected in public charging station electricity consumption, which reached 62.4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) as of June 2026.In just six months, the figure already surpassed the total electricity consumption of charging stations throughout 2025, which stood at 48.5 million kWh.
