Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has strengthened the competencies of Asia-Pacific aviation safety inspectors through an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) training program aimed at improving civil aviation certification and safety oversight in line with international standards.The 15-day International Civil Aviation Organization Government Safety Inspector Airworthiness Air Operator and Approved Maintenance Organization Certification (GSI-AIR) Course concluded in Jakarta on Friday, bringing together 16 inspectors from 10 Asia-Pacific economies.The program was jointly organized by Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation, ICAO, and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-Boeing partnership, said Sukahir, head of the Curug Aviation Education and Training Center (BP3 Curug), Center for Human Resources Development of Air Transportation (PPSDMPU), Ministry of Transportation, in a statement issued in Jakarta on Saturday.He said the course was designed to improve the competencies, qualifications, and standardization of airworthiness inspectors, enabling them to carry out aircraft certification and civil aviation safety oversight in accordance with ICAO standards.The program implements Law No. 1 of 2009 on Aviation and Government Regulation No. 51 of 2012 on Human Resources in the Transportation Sector, which emphasize strengthening transportation personnel to support aviation safety.Participants included three inspectors each from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Papua New Guinea, along with one representative each from Thailand, Vietnam, Timor-Leste, Fiji, Laos, India, and Hong Kong.During the training, participants received comprehensive instruction on air operator and approved maintenance organization certification, including certification document evaluation, ICAO's Five-Phase Certification Process, field inspection techniques, and safety oversight procedures.The course also included a Train the Trainer Program to prepare participants as future instructors capable of strengthening aviation safety expertise in their respective countries.”The commitment and active participation of all participants reflect a strong dedication to strengthening the aviation safety culture in their respective countries,” Sukahir said.He expressed hope that participants would apply the knowledge and experience gained during the course to improve the effectiveness of aviation safety oversight.Meanwhile, Acting Head of Training at the Center for Human Resources Development of Air Transportation (PPSDMPU), Ministry of Transportation, Ratri, said the course not only strengthened participants' technical capabilities but also expanded professional networks among aviation safety inspectors across the Asia-Pacific.”Throughout the training, participants demonstrated improved competencies in certification and oversight processes in accordance with ICAO standards,” she said.Ratri said the successful implementation of the ICAO GSI-AIR Course further reinforced Indonesia's position as one of the Asia-Pacific region's aviation human resources development centers.Indonesia will host two additional ICAO international training programs in August and September 2026 on Government Safety Inspector Operations – Air Operator Certification and Government Safety Inspector – Personnel Licensing.The series of international training programs is part of Indonesia's efforts to strengthen aviation human resources in line with global standards while supporting the country's active role in international civil aviation governance, including its bid for a seat on the ICAO Council.
