Indonesia targets domestic EV motorcycles, fuel bikes for export

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia plans to reshape its motorcycle industry by directing domestic production and sales toward electric motorcycles, while conventional fuel-based models will be targeted for export markets, an official said.Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said Thursday in Jakarta that the government is preparing regulations to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, particularly motorcycles. “The government is preparing regulations that will require manufacturers to ensure sufficient production of electric motorcycles for the domestic market. We want all motorcycles sold locally to be electric,” he explained. Conventional motorcycles will continue to be produced but primarily for export, with markets in Africa, the Middle East, and South America identified as key destinations. Kartasasmita stressed that the policy aims to maintain industrial sustainability while pushing businesses to adapt to electrification. “We must begin building capacity to produce electric motorcycles. China has succeeded in becoming the base for electric motorcycles, and Indonesia must follow,” he said. He added that President Prabowo Subianto has directed that all future vehicles should be electric, underscoring the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.“There really is no other choice but to convert to electric,” Kartasasmita noted. On incentives for electric motorcycles, the minister said discussions with the Finance Ministry are ongoing, with details yet to be finalized.
