Indonesia to test hydrogen vehicles on Jakarta roads in July 2026

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia will test hydrogen-powered buses, cars, and converted motorcycles on Jakarta roads in July 2026, marking a significant step toward building a national hydrogen ecosystem and accelerating the country’s clean energy transition, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said. The trials are scheduled for July 23 along the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor as part of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2026. Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot announced the plan while opening a pre-summit event virtually on Tuesday.“The government has a strong interest in this summit because we view hydrogen development from a full-ecosystem perspective,” Yuliot said.He noted that the summit will include conferences, business matching sessions, hydrogen road trials, and vehicle test drives, all aimed at strengthening stakeholder confidence in the development of Indonesia’s hydrogen industry. The government is seeking to expand hydrogen use beyond fertilizer production and oil refining by promoting its application in the transportation sector, as part of efforts to establish a broader hydrogen ecosystem, he said.Indonesia has designated hydrogen and ammonia as strategic new energy sources under Government Regulation No. 40 of 2025, with a target contribution of 10 to 12 percent to the primary energy mix by 2060.Current national hydrogen consumption stands at around 1.75 million tons per year, largely concentrated in the fertilizer and refining industries, underscoring the need to diversify its applications, Yuliot added. He said GHES 2026 is designed to enhance cross-sector collaboration in advancing hydrogen and ammonia development, supporting Indonesia’s energy transition agenda and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier.
