 Indonesian Govt backs radio industry to boost creative economy

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Ministry of Creative Economy is backing efforts to strengthen the radio industry, citing its key role in distributing creative content and supporting the nation’s creative economy.Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya highlighted that radio reaches up to 16 million listeners across 10 major cities, making it a vital channel for creative economy businesses.“The Ministry of Creative Economy is committed to supporting the strengthening of the radio industry so that it remains relevant, competitive, and contributes to regional economic growth,” Harsya said Saturday.The ministry is also promoting a stronger national broadcasting sector by providing supportive regulations and facilitating strategic partnerships.Data from the Indonesian National Private Broadcast Radio Association (PRSSNI) shows annual radio advertising expenditures at around Rp750 billion (US$44.8 million), indicating the industry still holds significant growth potential.To reinforce radio’s role amid a changing media landscape, PRSSNI and the Radio Discussion Forum organized the 17th Radio Summit in Central Jakarta on Nov. 15, 2025. The event gathered industry representatives, advertisers, academics, and regulators from across the country.Agustini Rahayu, deputy for Media Creativity at the ministry, said the summit aims to encourage the revival of the national radio industry. “I invite all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration to ensure the radio industry remains relevant, resilient, and able to adapt amid the digital era,” she said.PRSSNI Chairperson M. Rafik added that industry players must act quickly to meet challenges from digital transformation. “Collaboration is key. With synergy among radio stations, associations, and creative industry players, we can turn radio into a new economic power,” he said.Officials stressed that continued investment, partnerships, and innovation will be crucial to sustaining radio as a platform for creative content and economic growth in Indonesia.
