Indonesian Navy weighs missile options for new warship

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s navy is considering missile systems from Italy, France and Turkiye to arm its newest warship, KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, which arrived in Jakarta on Thursday, as part of efforts to strengthen its maritime defense capabilities.“Navy Chief Adm. Muhammad Ali said missile options remain under review, with several candidates under consideration.“We are still evaluating the missiles. There are options from Italy, from MBDA France, and possibly from Turkiye,” he told a press briefing.He said decisions on missile systems, as well as onboard sensors, have yet to be finalized and are currently under assessment.“However, the ship’s guns have already been confirmed,” he added.KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 arrived at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta after departing from the Italian naval base in La Spezia on Feb. 11, 2026. The vessel made a brief stop in Lampung on Monday (March 23) before reaching the capital.Navy spokesperson Adm. Tunggul said the vessel, built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, is designed for a wide range of missions.He said the warship is capable of conducting patrol operations, surface, subsurface and air warfare, escorting strategic assets, enforcing maritime law, and carrying out humanitarian missions.Measuring 143 meters in length and 16.5 meters in beam, the ship underwent weapons capability and combat readiness tests before arriving in Indonesia.These included structural firing tests of its 127 mm main gun during its final voyage before departing for Indonesia on Jan. 27.The test marked the first live firing of the 127 mm gun as part of broader weapons and structural system trials.“This marks the first time an Indonesian Navy warship has operationally deployed a large-caliber gun above 120 mm,” Tunggul said in a statement.He added the vessel is equipped with an OTO Melara 127 mm main gun, a 76 mm Strales gun for medium-range air defense, 16 vertical missile launchers, Teseo Mk-2E anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine torpedoes, and close-range automated weapons systems.The arrival of KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 is expected to bolster Indonesia’s naval defense posture and support the navy’s mission to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and maritime security.Related news: KRI Brawijaya 320 to protect maritime resources: Defense MinisterRelated news: Indonesia, Türkiye partner to boost Navy ship standards
