Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's National Police have named 12 suspects and rescued seven babies in a human trafficking case that allegedly involved selling infants through social media under the guise of adoption.”Investigators have named 12 suspects and rescued seven baby victims,” Inspector General Nunung Syaifuddin, Deputy Chief of Polri’s Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim), said on Wednesday.Brigadier General Nurul Azizah of Bareskrim's Directorate of Crimes against Women and Children said the trafficking network operated in Jakarta, Banten, Yogyakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Sulawesi, Jambi, Bali, Kalimantan, the Riau Islands, and Papua.She said the 12 suspects comprise eight alleged middlemen and four parents, including the biological father of one of the babies.According to investigators, the suspects marketed the babies through social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok under the guise of adoption.”Based on their statements, this network has been conducting illegal baby trafficking since 2024, generating hundreds of millions of rupiah,” Azizah said.Police seized 21 mobile phones, 17 ATM cards, 74 documents, and a bag containing baby supplies as evidence.The suspects have been charged under articles of the Child Protection Law and the Human Trafficking Law.The seven rescued babies are currently undergoing assessment by the Ministry of Social Affairs.In January 2025, Riau police arrested three women for allegedly selling a newborn baby for Rp35 million, or around US$2,210.
