Indonesia’s BMKG strengthens maritime radar to improve early warnings

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is expanding its weather and maritime radar network to strengthen early warnings of extreme weather in coastal areas and waters nationwide.During a hearing with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Tuesday, BMKG head Teuku Faisal Fathani said that new radar installations are under construction in four provinces: Central Kalimantan, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, and Bali.”Maritime radar is the backbone of monitoring heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves that endanger shipping,” he said. The program forms part of the Maritime Meteorological System 2 (MMS2), which will run until 2027, targeting 17 active radar units across Indonesia. The agency is also strengthening its land-based weather radar to improve coverage in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.Fathani said the new infrastructure would reduce delays in observation data and increase the speed of local weather predictions.”Our target is for coastal communities to receive rapid warnings for early anticipation,” he remarked. He added that upgrading maritime radar is a strategic step to support national shipping and maritime tourism.Fathani also informed Commission V members that the accuracy of BMKG’s meteorological, climatological, and geophysical information has reached 102.9 percent of the national performance indicator target.”This achievement demonstrates the reliability of the observation system and the improvement of analytical capacity across all BMKG work units,” he noted. He further reported that the public satisfaction index for BMKG services reached 99.73 percent in the third quarter of 2025.Fathani attributed the results to upgraded observation technology and improved human resource capacity in the disaster management sector. To ensure operational reliability, BMKG operates a main control center in Jakarta supported by a backup command center in Bali.
