Jakarta Police deploy 9,242 personnel to guard Tuesday rallies

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta police deployed 9,242 joint security personnel to guard 31 protests and 16 public activities across the capital on Tuesday, including events marking Indonesia's 81st Independence Day.The deployment includes 5,670 Jakarta Metropolitan Police personnel, 222 precinct officers, 1,500 military personnel, and 1,850 officers from National Police headquarters, police spokesman Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said.Security personnel were stationed at key locations across Central, East, and South Jakarta, including areas hosting events linked to Independence Day celebrations.Budi emphasized that all officers are strictly prohibited from carrying firearms while securing public demonstrations, in accordance with police chief directives and standard operating procedures.“Firearms are not allowed when providing security for public demonstrations. We will carry out our duties professionally and humanely,” Budi said. While public demonstrations are protected under Law No. 9 of 1998, police urged protesters to respect the rights of other residents as mandated by Article 6.Authorities advised organizers not to concentrate rallies around the HI Traffic Circle, the Horse Statue, Semanggi, or Sudirman areas, which serve as vital economic, hotel, and public transportation hubs.Traffic diversions around the HI Traffic Circle, National Monument, and Jalan Merdeka Selatan will be implemented as needed, Budi added, urging residents to monitor official police social media channels for real-time traffic updates. The deployment comes as the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI) announced plans to demonstrate Tuesday under the banner “Call to Reclaim Independence,” following a post on its official Instagram account.
