Measles cases rise, Indonesia urges vigilance among health workers

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government has issued a circular letter on measles precautions for healthcare workers following an increase in cases and the extraordinary occurrence (KLB) in several regions.”With rising measles cases and hospitalizations, healthcare workers face high risk. Vigilance and protection measures must be strengthened in all health facilities,” Acting Director General of Disease Control Andi Saguni said in Jakarta on Sunday. He said healthcare workers are vulnerable due to frequent contact with patients. As of the 11th week of 2026, 58 measles outbreaks were recorded in 39 districts and cities across 14 provinces. Cases reached 2,740 earlier this year but have declined to 177.As part of control measures, the ministry has carried out outbreak response immunization (ORI) and a measles/MR catch-up campaign (CUC) in 102 districts and cities, targeting children aged 9 to 59 months. However, vigilance must be strengthened, particularly in healthcare facilities.Through the circular, the ministry instructs hospitals and health facilities to enhance preventive measures, including early screening and triage, preparing isolation rooms, ensuring the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE), and strengthening infection control systems.Healthcare workers are also required to strictly follow infection prevention protocols and immediately report symptoms indicating measles.”We urge all healthcare workers to remain vigilant and report suspected cases promptly. A quick response is essential to prevent further spread,” he said. The ministry also stressed that all suspected measles cases must be reported within 24 hours through the surveillance system. The circular is expected to strengthen preparedness and coordination among stakeholders to curb the spread of measles and protect healthcare workers.
