Minister pushes ESG principles for sustainable tourism

Bali (ANTARA) – Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana pressed for the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles to strengthen the competitiveness of the tourism industry and support Indonesia's sustainable tourism transformation.”We hope more tourism businesses will be motivated to implement ESG principles and view sustainability as a strategic, long-term investment,” she said during the opening of the 2026 Eco Tourism Week – Wonderful Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Industry Forum (WI-STIF) in Bali, on Saturday.Wardhana noted that amid growing investor attention toward sustainability, the implementation of ESG has become key in attracting global investment and partnerships to the tourism sector. She added that global investors and partners no longer look solely at economic factors, but also at environmental sustainability, social impact, and good governance. Therefore, she said, the government continues to make tangible efforts to advance sustainable tourism development across destinations. These include the development of environmentally friendly infrastructure, the revitalization of tourist destinations, and various environmental recovery programs and carrying capacity assessments for tourism areas. The Ministry of Tourism is also carrying out the Clean Tourism Movement as part of efforts to raise public awareness about the importance of cleanliness and sanitation at tourist destinations. The initiative aligns with the Indonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful) Movement launched by President Prabowo Subianto to bolster national waste management and create a cleaner, healthier, and more comfortable environment for both local communities and tourists.“I hope this forum can strengthen our collective awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism and encourage all stakeholders to play a more active role in building cross-sector collaboration,” she remarked. She particularly expressed hope that the forum can create innovation, build partnerships, and yield solutions to accelerate Indonesia's transformation toward sustainable tourism.Co-Founder of Eco Tourism Bali, Suzy Hutomo, stated that Eco Tourism Week serves not only as a platform for discussion but also as a forum to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in driving the implementation of sustainable tourism practices.“Through this forum, we want to focus on solutions and tangible implementation. Various critical topics will be discussed, ranging from ESG to regenerative tourism through diversity, sustainable operations, and positive impacts for local communities,” Hutomo said.
