Surabaya (ANTARA) – Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo has called for the acceleration of phase two construction under the tuition-free education program Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School) in Surabaya, East Java, while stressing the need to meet the national completion target of June 20.“I want all stakeholders to remain committed to completing construction on time. With the current progress, we expect the work to be finished before June 20, God willing,” he said, adding that school operations are planned to begin on July 1.Speaking in Surabaya on Sunday, Hanggodo reported that construction progress of Sekolah Rakyat in the city has reached 45 percent, while in Sampang District on Madura Island it has approached 40 percent.The minister noted that state-owned construction company Waskita Karya has been assigned to lead the project, which currently employs 571 workers in Surabaya.“Overall construction works carried out by Waskita and its partners have been progressing well,” he said.He emphasized the importance of accelerating construction to support the implementation of the Sekolah Rakyat program, an initiative introduced by Prabowo Subianto to expand access to quality education for children from underprivileged families and help alleviate poverty through human capital development.In Surabaya, he added, construction is underway on 6.6 hectares of land provided by the municipal government in Kedung Cowek, Bulak sub-district, where a school complex is being developed to accommodate up to 1,000 students across elementary, junior high, and senior high levels.In addition to classrooms, the facility will include student dormitories, vertical housing for teachers, a mosque, multipurpose rooms, a canteen, and sports courts.Hanggodo also called for stronger coordination and tighter on-site supervision to ensure the project meets both quality and timeline standards.He affirmed that the Ministry of Public Works remains committed to monitoring Sekolah Rakyat development nationwide to ensure timely completion and deliver optimal benefits to the public.
