Number of displaced residents in Sumatra drops to 12,994: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said the number of people displaced by floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra has fallen sharply from more than 2 million to 12,994.“The number of displaced residents has decreased from over 2 million to around 12,994 people who are still living in tents,” he said at a coordination meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday. In Aceh, where the number of displaced residents had previously reached 1.4 million, 12,144 people remain in evacuation tents. In North Sumatra, of the 53,523 residents initially displaced, 850 are still in temporary shelters. All of them are staying at a single site in Central Tapanuli District. In West Sumatra, no displaced residents remain, compared with 16,164 people recorded earlier.Karnavian, who also serves as chair of the Sumatra Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force, said affected residents have gradually returned home after receiving stimulant assistance for houses with minor and moderate damage.Others whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed have moved into temporary housing.“Those whose homes were heavily damaged or lost are living in temporary housing and are receiving a transitional housing allowance,” he said. The minister emphasized that the government is accelerating rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts to ensure all affected residents can return to adequate housing and that basic services are fully restored. The three Sumatra provinces (Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra) were hit by floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in late November 2025.According to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), as of Feb. 18 the disasters had claimed 1,206 lives and damaged more than 300,000 homes.
