Nyepi Day momentum for correctional guidance over punishment: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s corrections ministry linked the values of Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, to its rehabilitation-focused prison programs as it granted sentence reductions to more than 1,500 inmates.Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto said the philosophy of Nyepi aligns with efforts to shift corrections away from punishment toward rehabilitation and self-improvement.Speaking in remarks delivered by Director General of Corrections Mashudi at Cipinang Detention Center in Jakarta on Wednesday, Andrianto referred to this year’s Nyepi theme, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: One Earth, One Family.”“‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ reflects a corrections approach that emphasizes awareness of wrongdoing and personal growth, rather than punishment,” he said.Mashudi said inmates should no longer be seen as marginalized individuals but as members of society in need of guidance, mentoring and rehabilitation. He added that improving service quality and strengthening commitment within correctional programs are part of the ministry’s 15 acceleration initiatives, which support the government’s broader development agenda toward “Golden Indonesia 2045.”As part of this effort, the ministry granted remission and sentence reductions to inmates and juvenile detainees who have completed rehabilitation programs and demonstrated good behavior.“The granting of remission and sentence reductions is expected to have a positive psychological impact, providing an opportunity to shorten prison terms,” Mashudi said.He added that the policy is intended to encourage inmates to feel valued and motivated to actively participate in correctional programs.“Today’s remission and sentence reductions show that inmates have complied with regulations and engaged in self-improvement efforts,” he said.Mashudi also urged beneficiaries to use the opportunity to prepare for reintegration into society after completing their sentences. On Wednesday, a total of 1,506 inmates received remission, while nine juvenile detainees were granted special sentence reductions, known as PMKP.Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to a more humane corrections system focused on rehabilitation and social reintegration.Nyepi, observed by Balinese Hindus, is marked by reflection, silence and self-restraint, values that authorities say resonate with efforts to reform inmate behavior.
