Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Police seized 996 guns from a private school in Pondok Pinang, South Jakarta, and summoned the former chair of the school’s foundation, identified by the initials IW, for questioning.“We have summoned IW for questioning as part of our investigation into the ownership, permits, storage location, and purpose of keeping the weapons,” police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto told the reporters in Jakarta on Friday.He said the investigators believe IW may have information relevant to the case, given their former leadership role in the school’s foundation.Budi added that the guns were first discovered by the school’s new management while clearing out a storage room.“They found weapon-shaped objects they believed to be firearms or other types of guns,” he said, adding that South Jakarta Police promptly responded after receiving a report from the school.The officer said the cache comprised 995 airsoft guns and one Franchi SPAS-15 12-gauge combat shotgun, which investigators confirmed to have belonged to a man who died several years ago.“As for the other 995, they are believed to comprise four 4.5-mm air rifles, 215 air pistols of 4.5-mm caliber, and 776 air revolvers of 4.5-mm caliber,” Budi added.He said the cache, discovered in July alongside narcotics and pornographic VCDs, is now being kept in a police warehouse as the investigation continues.Earlier on Friday, South Jakarta police dismissed the possibility that the weapons were linked to a shooting extracurricular program at the school.“No. I think this is unrelated to an extracurricular,” said Commissioner Adjunct Joko Adi Wibowo, the spokesperson of the resort police.His statement echoed comments from the foundation’s attorney, Hermawanto, who said that the school “never had a shooting extracurricular,” citing accounts from long-serving teachers.Those accounts contradicted claims by IW’s attorney, Alhadid Endar Putra, who maintained that the weapons were licensed and intended for school activities.Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized the provincial government’s support for the police investigation.“The Jakarta government supports firm law enforcement regarding this matter,” he said Friday.
