Prabowo, Canadian PM explore post-ICA-CEPA economic cooperation

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney explored new cooperation opportunities that may arise following the signing of the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA).According to Canadian Ambassador Jess Dutton during a media gathering on Wednesday, the two leaders discussed the issue via a phone conversation on Saturday (June 6).”The prime minister and the president identified opportunities to deepen trade and investment ties between Canada and Indonesia, including in the context of ICA-CEPA,” Ambassador Dutton stated.Besides economic cooperation after the trade deal, Prabowo and Carney also discussed other issues such as the impacts of the conflict in the Middle East on energy markets and the global economy. The envoy stated that ICA-CEPA is Canada's first-ever bilateral trade agreement with an ASEAN country.Once ICA-CEPA is in full implementation, Canadian exports to Indonesia, such as wheat, potash, wood, and soybeans, will be much easier and more competitive. Moreover, the agreement provides tariff reduction or elimination for over 95 percent of current Canadian exports to Indonesia.Last month, the Canadian Parliament completed the ratification process of the ICA-CEPA. With Ottawa having completed the process, Canada is awaiting the process in Jakarta to conclude, he said.As Indonesia continues its process, Canada expects ICA-CEPA will enter into force before the end of this year, Dutton added.Besides ICA-CEPA and global dynamics, President Prabowo and PM Carney also discussed the progress of the Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to be completed this year.”Prime Minister Carney welcomed Indonesia's continued support for advancing this shared objective,” the Canadian envoy remarked. The comprehensive trade agreement was signed by Indonesian and Canadian representatives in Ottawa on September 24, 2025, and witnessed by President Prabowo and PM Carney.ICA-CEPA implementation is expected to encourage Indonesian exports to Canada to US$11.8 billion by 2030, supporting Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth by 0.12 percent and increasing domestic investments by 0.38 percent.
