Prabowo orders resource push to secure energy autonomy

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an acceleration of mineral downstreaming and resource optimization to strengthen national energy independence and increase state revenue, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said on Wednesday.Following a meeting at the president’s residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, Lahadalia outlined plans for 13 new downstreaming projects with a total investment of about Rp239 trillion, or roughly US$15 billion. The projects aim to reinforce the national economic structure through industrial processing. He said natural resources are strategic national assets and that the president had instructed the ministry to identify new sources of mineral revenue to ensure the state gains a fairer share of its resource wealth.“The president has instructed me to prioritize national interests above all else and to safeguard our natural resources as state assets,” Lahadalia said, referring to the government’s stance on national sovereignty. The government is currently overseeing 20 initial downstreaming projects. Several have already begun construction, while the rest are scheduled to start next month, signaling a shift toward industrial processing instead of exporting raw materials.“We are adding 13 downstreaming projects with a total investment of around Rp239 trillion, and we will finalize the details,” Lahadalia said.Beyond minerals, the government is also prioritizing energy self-sufficiency by optimizing domestic resources such as ethanol and biodiesel derived from crude palm oil, while accelerating the transition to renewable energy. On market dynamics, Lahadalia said policies on coal and nickel remain unchanged. The government continues to monitor global prices, balancing production levels with international supply and demand to maintain competitiveness. He expressed hope that global commodity prices will remain stable, adding that if conditions stay favorable, the government may introduce measured adjustments to production planning to maximize economic benefits without oversupplying the market. The integrated policies are aimed at building a more resilient national economy through industrial downstreaming and sovereign resource management, while strengthening domestic energy capacity and enhancing Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global market.
