Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto said he has allocated about Rp4 trillion (around US$231.9 million) to upgrade 1,800 railway crossings across Java to improve public transportation safety.“We estimate nearly Rp4 trillion for safety,” he said while visiting train accident victims at dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Regional Hospital in Bekasi on Tuesday. He said many crossings date to the Dutch colonial era and have not undergone comprehensive upgrades for decades. He noted many crossings are unguarded, making them prone to accidents. He instructed officials to address the issue through two approaches: building guard posts or constructing flyovers.“I will order immediate fixes, whether through guard posts or flyovers. We will appoint executors later,” he said.MFor Bekasi, he approved flyover construction under a presidential assistance scheme due to severe traffic congestion. The Bekasi administration had earlier proposed flyovers to reduce accident risks at vulnerable crossings. As of 8:45 a.m. local time, a train collision near East Bekasi Station left 14 dead and 84 injured.State railway company KAI said all medical and funeral costs would be covered by insurance and the company.Injured victims have been taken to several facilities, including Bekasi Regional Hospital, Kramat Jati Police Hospital for identification, and private hospitals in Bekasi.KAI has also set up emergency and information posts at East Bekasi Station to assist families seeking information on passengers and belongings.
