President Prabowo to unveil fresh EV incentives in coming weeks

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto is set to announce a new round of incentives for electric vehicles (EVs) in the coming weeks, according to Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa.“I believe the president will launch stimuli in the next two or three weeks for EVs, including around 500,000 electric motorbikes and electric cars,” he said at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday. He noted that the incentives would include a full exemption from the luxury goods sales tax, while the government would also cover 40 percent of the value-added tax for vehicles meeting certain criteria. However, Purbaya indicated that the incentives are likely to be limited to battery electric vehicles, signaling the exclusion of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.“From what I heard, the plan is to cover only (pure) EVs,” the minister stated. The initiative aligns with the 2027 Macroeconomic Framework and Fiscal Policy Principles (KEMPPKF), which integrate national car and motorcycle development into Indonesia’s broader downstreaming and industrialization agendas.Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in late July that the government intends to prioritize distributing incentives to EVs manufactured by national brands to strengthen the automotive industry. However, the government has yet to specify criteria for the policy, including whether “national brands” refers strictly to Indonesian-owned companies or includes foreign manufacturers producing vehicles with high domestic component levels. The Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) has expressed confidence in the policy, assessing that it would help stimulate automotive industry growth and accelerate the sector’s energy transition.Indef Executive Director Esther Sri Astuti said the incentives could encourage greater EV adoption but stressed that complementary measures are needed to maximize their impact. She emphasized the importance of supporting universities' EV projects, attracting investment in battery manufacturing, expanding charging infrastructure, and extending incentives to manufacturers to encourage mass production of affordable EVs.
