Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is banking on a nationwide shopping campaign to boost consumer spending during the year-end holidays, as the government targets a surge in retail activity to support economic growth.Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the BINA Indonesia Great Sale 2025 program is expected to help drive money circulation during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.“BINA, or Belanja di Indonesia Aja Indonesia Great Sale, runs from Dec. 18, 2025, until Jan. 4, 2026,” Widiyanti told a press conference in Jakarta on Friday. The program is being held across 24 provinces and involves more than 400 shopping malls nationwide. Widiyanti said its broad scale aligns with the growing trend of working from anywhere, including from malls.Workers who choose to work from shopping centers are expected to spend on items such as coffee or meals while using mall facilities, she said. That spending, Widiyanti added, is expected to help keep the economy moving and support the success of the BINA Indonesia Great Sale.“When more people or employees work from malls, it can increase economic circulation,” she said.At the same event, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the government is targeting total public spending of up to Rp110 trillion ($7.1 billion) by the end of 2025.The target is expected to be supported by a series of national discount programs at shopping centers and online platforms. These include the National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas), retail discount programs in malls and the BINA Indonesia Great Sale itself.Airlangga said stronger household consumption would help underpin Indonesia’s economic growth this year.He also highlighted shopping tourism as a key attraction for foreign visitors, particularly tourists from Malaysia, Indonesia’s largest source of international arrivals.Malaysian visitors often combine leisure trips with shopping and travel on the Whoosh high-speed rail, he said, underscoring the growing role of malls beyond traditional retail. The government is encouraging malls to function as more productive spaces, including for workers, and to accommodate the work-from-anywhere concept. The BINA Indonesia Great Sale 2025 is positioned as a strategic collaboration between the retail and tourism sectors to boost domestic spending while promoting leading local products.Shoppers can enjoy discounts of up to 80 percent, while foreign tourists are eligible for value-added tax refunds of up to 11 percent. The program is led by the Tourism Ministry and supported by the Trade Ministry, the Cooperatives and SMEs Ministry, other government agencies, the Jakarta provincial administration and regional governments nationwide. The government is targeting Rp30 trillion in transactions from the BINA Indonesia Great Sale alone.
