RI Govt offers cash aid to flood, landslide victims in Sumatra

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s social affairs ministry said Monday it is providing millions of rupiah in cash assistance to families affected by deadly floods and landslides in Aceh and other parts of Sumatra, as authorities shift from emergency response to recovery and rebuilding. The Ministry of Social Affairs will disburse Rp3 million (about US$178) per family to help furnish temporary and permanent housing provided by the government for disaster victims, Deputy Social Affairs Minister Agus Jabo Priyono told a press conference in Jakarta. He said the cash assistance is intended to ensure families relocating to temporary shelters or permanent homes can meet basic household needs and quickly resume daily activities after losing homes and possessions to the disasters. In addition, the ministry is providing monthly cash support of Rp450,000 per person to help families buy food while they stay in temporary or permanent housing, Priyono said. The assistance will be paid for three months to ease the immediate burden on affected households.“Beyond basic needs, we are also preparing empowerment assistance to support economic recovery,” he said, adding that families will receive Rp5 million in cash based on assessments conducted by officials in affected areas. As of Monday, December 29, the ministry had distributed Rp100.4 billion in emergency relief aid for flood and landslide response across Sumatra, he said, underscoring the scale of government intervention following weeks of extreme weather. The aid includes food supplies, family kits, children’s clothing and ingredients to support operations at 42 public kitchens set up to serve displaced residents, Priyono said, adding that logistics have been coordinated with local authorities.Of the total assistance, Rp43.6 billion was allocated to Aceh, Rp19.4 billion to West Sumatra and Rp37.4 billion to North Sumatra, according to ministry data.Priyono also said death benefits of Rp15 million per person had been paid to 86 families of victims who were killed in the disasters, for a total of Rp1.29 billion. The beneficiaries include two victims in Pidie district, 30 in Pidie Jaya District and 54 in the city of Sibolga.Payments for families of victims in Padang Panjang District, West Sumatra, are still being processed, he said, noting that verified data from local governments and the national disaster agency would be followed up promptly to complete the disbursements.
