Bandung (ANTARA) – Indonesia's West Java Province has begun construction of the Legok Nangka waste-to-energy plant, a US$400 million project designed to process 2,000 tons of waste daily while supplying electricity to the regional grid by 2029.West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said on Wednesday the facility would provide a long-term solution to waste management in Greater Bandung, covering Bandung City, Bandung District, West Bandung District, and Cimahi City. “Today, we have received three major blessings whose benefits we will experience in 2029. First, the waste problems in Bandung City, Bandung District, West Bandung District, and Cimahi City will have a solution,” Dedi said.He said the project is expected to address mounting waste challenges following the limited capacity of the Sarimukti final disposal site.As a short-term measure, the provincial government is also promoting small-scale waste processing systems that convert waste into briquettes at the village level.”One short-term solution is to install simple waste-processing equipment to produce briquettes in every urban village. The West Java provincial government has already demonstrated this approach at Gedung Sate,” he said.Dedi said the project would also increase electricity supply, strengthening the province's power system and supporting future investment.”The second benefit is that we will gain additional electricity, which will strengthen the power system and support investment,” he said.He added that the project is expected to improve environmental quality by reducing waste accumulation and expanding green open spaces across West Java.”The third benefit is that the environment will become cleaner. The air will improve, and the number of trees should continue to increase,” Dedi said.Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung said the Legok Nangka facility is designed to process about 2,000 tons of waste per day and generate approximately 40 megawatts of electricity.”The project is expected to create 1,500 jobs and generate about 40 megawatts of electricity. This will strengthen energy availability in West Java Province,” he said.He added that the plant will have an installed generating capacity of 40.79 megawatts and is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2029 after an estimated 41-month construction period.The project, valued at about US$400 million, or approximately Rp7.2 trillion, is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 311,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent while serving as a long-term urban waste management solution.
