Jakarta (ANTARA) – Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said the benefits of the downstream policy must be felt more fairly by producing regions and communities around industrial areas.Although the downstream policy has recorded various achievements, Pandjaitan said a number of tasks still need to be completed, ranging from equitable distribution of economic benefits and a bigger role for local entrepreneurs to strengthening environmental and workplace safety aspects.”The benefits of downstreaming must be fairer for regions and communities around industrial areas. National and regional entrepreneurs must move up the value chain,” Pandjaitan said here on Friday.He added that technology must be mastered by Indonesia's own people, and that environmental and safety standards could not be compromised.The global market is increasingly demanding clean and sustainable supply chains, so meeting environmental standards is no longer optional but a requirement for improving competitiveness, he added.On the occasion, Pandjaitan also touched on the journey of the mineral downstream policy, which had drawn criticism, including when the government banned nickel ore exports and faced a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization (WTO).However, the policy has now proven able to increase the added value of mineral commodities, reflected in the surge in exports of downstream nickel products and economic growth in a number of industrial areas.”Exports of nickel products and their derivatives have multiplied,” Pandjaitan said.He added that Morowali and Central Halmahera, which used to be barely recorded on the national economic map, are now growing in double digits and have become part of the global industrial supply chain.
