DPR calls on government to address rupiah’s weakening

Jakarta (ANTARA) – House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government and relevant policymakers to anticipate the weakening of the rupiah, which has now reached Rp17,503 per US dollar. She said the rupiah’s depreciation must continue to be anticipated through 2027. The government, she added, should also closely monitor global conditions contributing to the weakening.“This situation must not have an impact that would cause Indonesia to fall into a downturn,” she said after chairing a plenary meeting at the parliamentary complex here on Tuesday.During this parliamentary session, she noted that the House of Representatives will begin discussions on the Macroeconomic Framework and Fiscal Policy Principles (KEM-PPKF) for the 2027 State Budget (APBN).“This is also part of anticipating the upcoming state budget and fiscal conditions,” she said. She added that the weakening exchange rate is not only experienced by Indonesia, as it is also linked to global conditions. Therefore, she stressed that the government, including Bank Indonesia, must take action.Previously, the rupiah exchange rate on Tuesday at 11:47 a.m. Jakarta time weakened by 89 points or 0.51 percent to Rp17,503 per US dollar, compared to the previous closing level of Rp17,414 per US dollar.Currency and commodity economist Ibrahim Assuaibi said the rupiah’s depreciation was influenced by escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.Conflicts in the Middle East have contributed to a fairly significant strengthening of the US dollar index, which in turn has pushed up crude oil prices, especially Brent crude oil.Indonesia’s economic growth in Q1 2026, which reached 5.61 percent, has not immediately improved overall economic conditions or strengthened the rupiah.
