Ecotheology takes center stage at Indonesia national Isra Mikraj event

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar highlighted the concept of ecotheology during the national commemoration of Isra Mikraj of the Prophet Muhammad at Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque, describing it as a response to the various challenges currently faced by society.“At the heart of this commemoration, we are emphasizing ecotheology. This is very timely as we observe Isra Mikraj at a moment when our society is being tested, while also providing encouragement to those who have been affected,” Nasaruddin said in Jakarta on Thursday evening. The national-level Isra Mikraj commemoration was attended by a number of senior officials, including Environment Minister Fadli Zon and Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq. Hanif delivered the keynote sermon at the event.Nasaruddin said every hardship experienced by humanity should be understood as a test that leads to an improvement in the quality of life. According to him, there is always wisdom to be gained from every trial.“We want to assure the public that this is a test. Where there is a test, there is an elevation. God will raise the level of our society,” he said.At the national level, Nasaruddin stressed that the message of Isra Mikraj remains relevant for strengthening unity and interfaith tolerance. He emphasized that tolerance does not mean erasing differences but accepting diversity without creating social distance.“Tolerance means allowing differences to remain while preserving common ground. What matters is that differences do not cause separation,” he explained. In his keynote, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said Isra Mikraj was a monumental event that carries not only spiritual significance but also serves as a reminder of humanity’s responsibility to protect the natural world created by God.He noted that the ecotheology theme of the commemoration is highly relevant amid the environmental crises currently faced globally.“Blessings in the Quran are not only spiritual blessings, but also ecological blessings—fertile land, abundant water, and sustainable life. This phrase delivers a very strong message. Sacred places in Islam are always closely linked to well-preserved environments,” Hanif said.He emphasized that spiritual sanctity cannot be separated from ecological sustainability. During Isra Mikraj, the Prophet Muhammad witnessed the orderly structure of the heavens, with each layer having its own function and order.“This shows that the universe operates according to the laws of divine balance and order,” he added.
