Govt removes 4.1 million illegal content items to secure digital space

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) has removed 4,198,606 pieces of negative content between October 20, 2024, and April 15, 2026.This extensive enforcement campaign is part of a national effort to shield the public from illegal and harmful online material.“The removal of 4.1 million content items is not merely a statistic, but concrete proof of the state’s presence in safeguarding society from the destructive impact of illegal content,” Director General of Digital Space Oversight Alexander Sabar stated in a statement on Saturday. The ministry’s data reveals that online gambling was the primary target of enforcement, dominating the figures with over 3.29 million cases. This was followed by pornography with approximately 798,000 cases, fraud with over 41,000 cases, and intellectual property violations totaling 9,217 cases. While the majority of these actions targeted traditional websites, there was also a significant crackdown on social media and file-sharing platforms. Platforms under the Meta umbrella accounted for nearly 199,000 removals, while file-sharing services contributed over 181,000 items to the total count. The government’s aggressive stance against negative content—particularly regarding intellectual property (IP) rights—has been praised by the Indonesia Video Streaming Association (AVISI).The ministry noted that it is deepening its collaboration with industry stakeholders and sectoral associations to ensure the digital ecosystem remains both productive and law-abiding.AVISI Chairman Hermawan Sutanto lauded the measures, noting that they send a powerful signal regarding the government's commitment to protecting both the public and the creative sector. He emphasized that for the streaming industry, intellectual property protection is a fundamental pillar for digital economic growth and the long-term sustainability of content creators. From the industry's perspective, robust IP protection is essential for building a healthy, secure, and competitive digital environment.
