Serang (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Public Works Ministry has mobilized river basin organizations nationwide to expand its Clean Irrigation Movement, aiming to secure raw water supplies, strengthen irrigation infrastructure and support President Prabowo Subianto's food self-sufficiency program.Speaking in Serang, Banten, Water Resources Director General Arnold Ritiauw said the initiative is part of the government's effort to maintain and improve irrigation infrastructure nationwide.”Clean irrigation is essential. We aim to secure quality raw water for communities and farms, prevent toxic contamination and reduce flood risks during heavy rainfall,” Ritiauw said in Sukadana, Kasemen Subdistrict, on Friday.Ritiauw said reliable irrigation is vital for agriculture, prompting the ministry to ensure irrigation infrastructure operates efficiently.He said the effort is crucial to preventing water shortages that could undermine President Prabowo Subianto's food self-sufficiency agenda.The ministry has revitalized Sukadana's primary irrigation canal, transforming a previously neglected area into a cleaner and better-managed waterway.He added the ministry will implement a presidential instruction to directly rehabilitate tertiary irrigation systems serving rice fields.Beyond infrastructure improvements, Ritiauw said the ministry is taking rapid measures to mitigate drought risks during the current dry season.He urged residents to report drought conditions to local river basin offices, which have supplied water to affected areas for the past 27 days.The Banten provincial government welcomed the ministry's proactive efforts to protect agricultural land across the province.Banten official Budi Santoso said the ministry has built and maintained irrigation networks supplying water to thousands of hectares of farmland.”Without irrigation, these farmlands would become unproductive. We appreciate the Public Works Ministry for extensively developing and maintaining irrigation networks across Banten,” he said.
