Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has a strong opportunity to become Asia’s hub for hydrogen production, trade, and development as low-carbon output grows, infrastructure expands, and regional demand rises, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.Prahoro Nurtjahyo, head of the ministry's Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM), in Jakarta on Wednesday emphasized that the world is currently entering a new phase in the energy transition.This shift no longer focuses solely on building renewable power capacity but also on delivering clean energy to hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry, shipping, logistics, and transportation.According to Prahoro, hydrogen is a key solution because it bridges the energy, industrial, and transportation sectors within a single low-carbon ecosystem.For Indonesia, he noted, hydrogen development is not only part of efforts to achieve net-zero emissions, but also supports national development priorities, including energy self-sufficiency, industrial downstreaming, and economic competitiveness.”Hydrogen development not only accelerates our 2060 net-zero target, but also aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision—particularly in achieving energy self-sufficiency, strengthening industrial downstreaming, and boosting national economic competitiveness,” he remarked.He noted that the Indonesian government has set the direction of hydrogen development through the National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap and Government Regulation Number 40 of 2025 on National Energy Policy.These policies place hydrogen and ammonia as key new energy sources supporting decarbonization across the industrial, power generation, and transportation sectors.However, he underscored that the success of the hydrogen industry hinges not just on production capacity, but on the presence of an integrated ecosystem.”The success of the hydrogen industry depends not just on production capability, but on building an integrated ecosystem that connects production, storage, distribution, and utilization,” Prahoro said.
