Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government plans to roll out incentives for 100,000 electric cars and 100,000 motorcycles in the initial stage this year.Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa announced on Tuesday that the government will disburse more incentives once the initial quota is met.“We will provide incentives, initially targeting 100,000 electric cars, and we will disburse more once the quota is met,” he said. The minister noted that the same initial target applies to the first stage of electric motorcycle distribution.Speaking at a state budget press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, Purbaya noted that Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita would outline details on the distribution scheme. He added that the exact amount of incentives would soon be announced by relevant parties for all eligible vehicles. The minister estimated that the support for electric motorcycles would be approximately 5 million rupiah or around 287 US dollars per unit.Purbaya highlighted that the policy partly stemmed from his meeting with the industry minister earlier that morning, who proposed fiscal measures to boost EV appeal amid mounting global pressures on Indonesia’s energy costs.“I am interested in the proposal to provide subsidies for electric vehicles,” the state treasurer remarked regarding the fiscal measures. He argued that promoting usage would help lower fuel consumption and strengthen the national economic resilience and budgeting posture. The minister also echoed the need to position electric vehicles as a strategic tool for maintaining manufacturing resilience and protecting workers.“This move is aimed at stimulating economic growth for the near term,” he added during the budget briefing. He reassured the public of the government’s commitment to maintaining stability through a significant boost for the manufacturing sector.Earlier Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that incentives are increasingly relevant as Indonesia seeks to reduce carbon emissions. He noted that the country must adapt to a shifting automotive market amid geopolitical tensions and energy supply disruptions. The industry minister also engaged the finance minister in talks to increase the export of manufactured products from Indonesia.
